Over the Holiday Break, Murph and I have had the chance to band at the marsh a couple of times. On both occasions we were only able to leave the nets open for a few minutes before they were full of Redpolls! Last winter the Redpolls were nowhere to be seen. This beautiful bird is dependant on the birch catkins for food and last winter the Redpolls did not have to travel very far south to get their favorite food. This year however their food source was less plentiful, and lucky for us they have decided to stop and feed in our area! Many people are reporting great numbers of redpolls cleaning out their backyard feeders. Other birds hanging around the marsh these past few days are bluejays, greyjays, chickadees, Pine Grosbeaks, and both hairy and downy woodpeckers. We are looking forward to banding more redpolls while we can this winter!
